Retired teacher Barbara Winfield always loved baking, but she found herself frustrated with one recurring challenge. Traditional cheesecake pans often required a second pan to support even baking, and the results were not always consistent. Uneven centers, dips in the surface, and extra cleanup became routine. Barbara knew there had to be a more efficient way to create a smooth, evenly baked cheesecake without the hassle of additional tools.
Driven by a practical problem many home bakers share, she began searching for a pan that could keep heat distributed evenly and eliminate the backup pan altogether. When she could not find what she needed on the market, she decided to design her own solution. That decision led to the creation of the Perfect Pan.
Barbara developed the Perfect Pan to create uniform heat flow while baking, helping prevent dips in the cake and ensuring a stable, level finish. The design also removes the need for an extra pan, which often complicates the process and adds more dishes to wash. For Barbara, this was one of her main motivations. She explained that she was tired of preparing multiple pans and wanted a cleaner, more streamlined baking setup.
Believing other bakers would feel the same way, Barbara contacted her local InventHelp office in October 2010 to purchase submission services and receive a referral to a patent attorney. She hoped the right support would help her present her idea to companies looking for new kitchenware designs.
In August 2011, the InventHelp DataBank submitted a brochure for the Perfect Pan to Chef’s Planet, a New York based company known for designing and manufacturing kitchen housewares for home cooks around the world. Chef’s Planet was founded in 2002 and distributes products through well known retailers such as Williams Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sur La Table, and a wide network of specialty kitchen stores.
After reviewing the brochure, John Cooper, the National Sales Manager at Chef’s Planet, reached out to Intromark Incorporated, InventHelp’s affiliated licensing company, to learn more about the invention.
Once the company expressed interest, conversations began between Chef’s Planet, Intromark Licensing Executive Justine Mayowski, and Barbara. Over the next two months, they entered into negotiations and worked through the details required to explore a licensing agreement for the Perfect Pan. Intromark later negotiated an advance and a royalty structure on Barbara’s behalf.
Barbara’s journey reflects the path many inventors take. She identified a common problem, developed a practical improvement, and sought out resources that could help her introduce her idea to companies in the kitchenware industry. The Perfect Pan is an example of how a single challenge in everyday life can lead to a new product with potential appeal for both home bakers and retailers.
